The Diocese of Simdega was erected by Pope john Paul II with territory taken from the Archdiocese of Ranchi. The Catholic Diocese of Simdega consists of the civil subdivision of Simdega.
The Catholic population of this diocese consists of tribals, mainly Khariyas, Mundas, Oraons and Baraiks.
Bp Joseph Minj was appointed the First Bishop of Simdega.
