Kohima, is the capital of Nagaland. The Diocese is named after the capital of the State. Nagaland is in the North-Eastern corner of India bordering Myanmar. There are 16 principal tribes. Collectively they are known as Naga Tribes. They have numerous linguistic and dialectical variations which are different from one another.

The attempt to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ by the Catholic Church began in December 1948, when the Sisters of the Missionaries of Christ Jesus and Monsignor E. Bars, sdb, arrived in Kohima to offer their services at the newly established hospital of Kohima. From then on the Catholic Church began to take roots in Nagaland with the help of zealous missionaries like Fr Marocchino, sdb, and the faithful Nagas. The heroic beginnings produced tangible results which witnessed the creation of separate Diocese for the States of Nagaland and Manipur.

Until 1973, the Catholic of Nagaland and Manipur were under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Dibrugarh. In 1973, the Diocese of Kohima-Imphal was erected comprising Nagaland and Manipur. Rt Rev Dr Abraham Alangimattathil, sdb, was its first Bishop. In 1980, this Diocese was bifurcated and the Diocese of Imphal was erected comprising Manipur. The Diocese of Kohima comprises the whole state of Nagaland.

Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil resigned on July 11, 1996 on health ground and Fr Jose Mukala, the Vicar General, was elected as the Diocesan Administrator.

Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil went to his eternal reward on November 18, 1997. On December 09, 1997, Rt Rev Jose Mukala was appointed as the second Bishop of the Diocese of Kohima and was consecrated on March 15, 1998.
